Manchester United have reportedly turned to Sander Berge as they look for an alternative to Manuel Ugarte.
The Red Devils spent all summer working on a deal for Ugarte but it was reported last night that the club have walked away from a deal due to Paris Saint-Germain’s huge asking price.
The Red Devils have been linked to numerous midfielders such as Martin Zubimendi, Youssouf Fofana, Adrien Rabiot and former player Sofyan Amrabat as alternatives to the Uruguayan.
One name more recently mentioned as a possible target has been Sander Berge and now the ultra-reliable outlet The Athletic have corroborated this story.
They report that “Berge, 26, has emerged as a surprise midfielder on United’s list of options and club officials have made contact with his camp.”
“The Norway international was relegated with Burnley last season but ranked highly in a series of metrics including dribbles and pressured pass accuracy” and put in a standout performance at Old Trafford in Burnley’s 1-1 draw against United in April.
The midfielder is six foot five (195 cm) but is also incredibly quick across the ground, hitting “a top speed of 35.90km/h, the 10th fastest of all players last campaign.”
It is mentioned that Burnley are prepared to sell the player and his price would surely be well below that which PSG are asking for Ugarte.
What’s more, the Norwegian would likely jump at the chance to move to Old Trafford to follow the fine tradition of Scandinavians representing the club.
It was reported earlier this morning that Fenerbahce were also chasing the midfielder as an alternative to Amrabat but with respect to the Turkish giants, United would fancy their chances of comfortably landing him over them.
Berge has made a name for himself in British football first at Sheffield United and later Burnley for his progressive play where his “passes create opportunities for his teammates to receive the ball in advantageous positions, leading to more effective attacking plays and potential goalscoring chances.”
Former boss Vincent Kompnay lauded the 26 year old as “an intelligent footballer with a great eye for a pass and the ability to run with the ball.”
