Applicants for the Manchester United job have been left stunned by the low wages on offer and the financial constraints they will face.

It was announced late on Tuesday night that Erik ten Haag would continue in his role after weeks of speculation suggesting otherwise.

INEOS’s end-of-season review concluded that the former Ajax manager was the best man to take the team forward and is likely to be offered a two-year extension.

However, the club’s new co-owners have conducted numerous interviews with various managers, with The Times revealing that “Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Kieran McKenna, Roberto De Zerbi and Thomas Frank held talks with United, either directly or through intermediaries” during the process.

Gareth Southgate is also highly regarded but has refused to speak to the club while preparations for EURO 2024 are underway.

There have been reports that United will have to make do with a limited transfer budget and live within their means due to PSR restrictions and a lack of Champions League football.

The Times confirms this, stating that Brentford and Thomas Frank “had doubts about whether United were prepared to pay the multi-million pound release clause in his contract, as well as the one McKenna had with Ipswich Town”.

“One shortlisted manager was stunned by the low salary he would receive if he took the United job, while another was unimpressed by the transfer budget, which the club hopes to increase by selling Sancho and Mason Greenwood, among others.”

United have built a reputation over the years for paying their players and managers astronomical wages and spending lavishly despite a distinct lack of success on the pitch.

INEOS’ new approach will certainly come as a shock to prospective applicants, but it may be the new reality for anyone looking to join United in the foreseeable future.

The outlet described the entire review process as “a bit haphazard and, in the end, United decided to stick with what they had”. In addition, “candidates were so out of the loop that their representatives would contact third parties to ask if they had heard any news.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has stated that he would rather go to the right decision than run to the wrong one, so INEOS will be hoping they have finally made the right decision despite the time it took.

However, talk of a lack of budget to provide attractive wages and a reported transfer kitty will certainly be a concern as United fans look forward to a big window to bring in new, exciting, young talent to inject life into a squad that has looked rather sluggish for most of the campaign 2023/2024.
