After a disastrous second season at Manchester United, Erik ten Hag’s position as first team manager looked under huge threat ahead of the FA Cup final.
However, an impressive performance against Manchester City at Wembley secured back-to-back trophies for Ten Hague and saved his job at Old Trafford in the process.
In the weeks leading up to and around the final, United have been linked with a number of names to replace the Dutchman, including England manager Gareth Southgate.
Southgate was believed to be favored by INEOS who have a strong personal relationship with the former Premier League defender.
However, the prospect of Southgate swapping the Three Lions for the Red Devils has not been welcomed by the Old Trafford faithful.
Fans appear to be universal in their lack of enthusiasm for the former Middlesbrough boss, which was backed up by a group at the supporters’ night.
According to The Athletic, the United legend attended the dinner and asked to see who would be happy with Southgate’s appointment.
The results were striking because not a single person on the floor raised their hand in support of the 53-year-old.
The club legend was reportedly “taken down” by the response and said he would make sure the powers that be at United were made aware of the consensus.
Whether or not fan reaction played a part in United’s final decision, Ten Haag has been handed a third season in Manchester and will be desperate to get the new campaign off to a good start.
United have the perfect opportunity to do just that with Fulham visiting the Theater of Dreams on the opening day of the Premier League season.
On the other hand, Southgate will be hoping for success at this summer’s European Championship in what is likely to be his last tournament in charge of the national team.
England continue their quest for glory against Denmark tomorrow (Thursday), after a winning start in the first group game against Serbia.
