Despite his claim that he is “very happy” at Liverpool, speculation about a move for Luis Diaz to Barcelona has continued in both Spain and Colombia.
“I’m very happy at Liverpool, it’s a great team and club,” he told Gol Caracol earlier this month.
“I always wanted to play there, so I’m very happy and calm. I’m not thinking about anything else, I’m thinking about the Colombian national team, which we’re in.”
Diaz, whose contract at Anfield runs until 2027, has indicated that while he is currently focused on preparations for the Copa America, he intends to return to Liverpool this summer.
That hasn’t stopped Barcelona’s interest, with The Athletic confirming their pursuit on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Colombian journalist Breinner Arteta Canizares went further claiming that a meeting was scheduled between Diaz’s representatives and the “emissaries of the Spanish club” in the United States either “this week or next.”
It is reported that the 27-year-old “would be all set to leave Liverpool FC and go to LaLiga”.
via in spain, Sport‘s Joaquim Piera reports that Diaz and Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes are “the two players Barca have chosen to reinforce two key positions”.
Piera cites the ongoing European Championship and the upcoming Copa America – which starts on Friday – as reasons that it will be a “very long and absolutely unpredictable” transfer window.
Barcelona are likely to wait for a “domino effect” from other big transfers before finalizing their moves, but “Diaz is the left winger that (sporting director) Deco considers ideal.”
Diaz has already received the green light from Barcelona’s new manager Hansi Flick, with the claim that all parties have agreed that he is a priority target.
In their report, The Athletic reiterate that Liverpool are “planning for pre-season” with Diaz, although their wording afterwards suggests a deal could be done.
“They would expect a significant fee for the Colombian winger to even consider selling,” writes Merseyside journalist Andy Jones.
“The 27-year-old has three years left on his current contract and the club would like to earn back the £50m they spent on him in January 2022.
Expecting a profit of £50m may be a tall order when it comes to Barcelona, of course, given their financial problems.
However, it cannot be overlooked that the Spanish side still managed to spend big on Ferran Torres (£47m), Raphinha (£55m), Jules Kounde (£42m), Robert Lewandowski (£43m) and the 19-year-old. -old Vitor Roque (£52m) in past seasons.
