As Manchester United begin to look to the future after the end of a tumultuous season, it appears as though INEOS are already starting their summer transfer review.
While Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team appear to feel that major changes are needed in United’s dressing room, there is the issue of the club’s limited transfer budget to contend with.
With the high price tags attached to transfer targets such as Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite and Crystal Palace forward Michael Olise, it is clear that United will need to offload some players in order to free up the funds necessary to sign such talent.
Football Insider claims Casemiro and Antony are two of the first players INEOS are considering offloading as they launch a transfer review.
In one sense, the mention of Antonio comes as no surprise, given his lack of form last season and consequent struggle to hold down a place in Erik ten Hag’s starting XI.
United’s embarrassing 4-0 defeat by Crystal Palace and their 4-2 win over Sheffield United were just two instances where the Brazilian failed to make any positive impact on the pitch.
However, there were positives in the winger’s performances, with Antony emerging as the best player in the Premier League when winning back possession in the final third, doing so an average of 1.7 times per match.
More importantly, the decision to sell the player at this low ebb after paying €95 million for him just two years ago would mean the club would take a huge hit on their investment.
Despite his constant mistakes in both midfield and at centre-back, an aging Casemiro may have an easier path out of Old Trafford.
Saudi club Al Nassr are reported to be ready to offer United a staggering €90m to €100m for the star, although in reality that seems unlikely and United would likely settle for much less.
Casemiro’s move seems even more likely now that it has been reported that he has already bid farewell to his team-mates following United’s FA Cup triumph.
The fact that he also became the director of FK Marbella and acquired shares in the club may suggest that the 32-year-old is already planning life after football.
If INEOS can successfully offload Antony and Casemiro this season, it could go a long way in freeing up the funds United need to pursue their summer signings and breathe new life into the squad.
