Haas confirmed on Thursday that Kevin Magnussen will leave the team at the end of the season.

Magnussen is Haas’ longest-serving driver, having raced with the team from 2017 to 2020 and then again since its return to Formula 1 in 2022.

Haas has already signed Ferrari rookie Oliver Biermann for a single seat in 2025, and ESPN sources suggest the team is close to securing Esteban Ocon, who will leave Alpine at the end of the season.

Magnussen’s options for extending his F1 career appear limited – as with most others, he may wait until Carlos Sainz decides his next move before his future becomes clearer.

Sainz’s stance appears to be holding up Ocon’s move to Haas as drivers keep contingency plans open. No news from Ocon is expected this week.

“I would like to thank everyone at the MoneyGram Haas Formula 1 Team – I have been proud to race with such a great team of people over the past few years,” Magnussen said in a team statement on his impending departure. “I would especially like to thank Gene Haas for his commitment to me, particularly in bringing me back for 2022 when I thought, at the time at least, that my time in Formula 1 was over.

“I have enjoyed some great moments with this team – memories I will never forget. As I look forward to the next chapter of my racing career, I remain fully focused on giving my all for the rest of 2024 with MoneyGram Haas F1 Team.”

In addition to his long tenure with the team, Magnussen also scored Haas’ first and only pole position at the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix.

Haas team principal Ayo Komatsu praised Magnussen for his contribution to the team over the years.

“I would like to thank Kevin for everything he has given us as a team – both on and off the track,” he said in a team statement. “He has truly been a cornerstone of our driver line-up over the years. No one has driven more races for us and we have had some great moments together – not least a fantastic fifth place at the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2022 when Kevin returned to start his second spell with the team.

“He didn’t expect to be driving a Formula 1 car that weekend, but he put in a fantastic performance that was a huge boost for the whole organisation and once again showed his talents behind the wheel.”

Magnussen scored a podium finish in Formula 1 on his debut with McLaren, but has not repeated that result since. His time with McLaren was limited to one season, but he also had a spell with Renault in 2016 before moving to Haas the following year.
