The Philadelphia Phillies are sending three center fielders to the Major League Baseball All-Star Game later this month, with Bryce Harper, Trea Turner and Alec Bohm among the starters selected for the mid-summer game on Wednesday night.
Turner beat out Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts in a close vote — though Betts will miss the game due to a broken left hand. Meanwhile, Bohm will make his first All-Star start after winning 70 percent of the final vote over San Diego Padres starter Manny Machado.
“It’s great for the organization,” Philadelphia coach Rob Thompson said.
The league announced its starting lineups Wednesday for the July 16 game in Arlington, Texas. The starting lineups include the New York Yankees, Houston Astros, Cleveland Guardians, Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres.
For the American League, the Yankees’ Aaron Judge and Juan Soto will start together in the outfield, along with the Guardians’ Stephen Cowan.
The Toronto Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will start at first base, with the Astros’ Jose Altuve at second, the Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson at shortstop and the Guardians’ Jose Ramirez at third. The Orioles’ Adlee Rutschman won the vote behind the plate, and the Astros’ Yordan Alvarez did the same at designated hitter. Alvarez narrowly edged out Baltimore’s Ryan O’Hearn in the final vote, 52 percent to 48 percent.
For the National League, Harper, Turner and Baum will be joined in the infield by Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Kettle Marte, while Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich will start alongside Padres teammates Jurickson Profar and Fernando Tatis Jr. in the outfield.
Brewers outfielder William Contreras will start behind the plate, while Dodgers star Shohei Otani gets the nod to play as a designated hitter.
Reserves will be announced on Sunday.
“Hopefully (Bryson) Stott can do it too,” Thompson said. “Atlanta did it last year with all four of their players doing it.”
