U.S. Ski and Snowboard and X Games have entered a strategic partnership, according to an announcement Thursday, June 27.
The news came after X Games announced its plans to begin at new competition format centered around teams composed of athletes from multiple disciplines who will compete for individual and team points to earn both individual and team prize purses. The X Games news was met with support from multiple professional athletes in Colorado’s High Country.
According to the press release, the collaboration will allow the two organizations to create The Winter X Games Series that will include International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) World Cup events, the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix and Visa Big Air and the Winter X Games.
X Games and U.S. Ski & Snowboard officials say they hope to elevate snowboarding and freeskiing competitions, including creating an athletic pathway to the Winter X Games. Winners of the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix and Visa Big Air events will receive guaranteed invitations to Winter X Games. If the winners have already secured an invitation, the next podium spot will be invited.
Additionally, the next generation of the nation’s best freeskiers and snowboarders will have the opportunity to rise to the X Games based on results from the Revolution Tour — U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s development series — which will also be co-branded with X Games.
U.S. Ski & Snowboard and X Games will also work together on the calendar and events, including adding X Games-specific disciplines like knuckle huck and street style to the U.S. World Cup weekends, which already include FIS-level halfpipe, slopestyle and big air.
More information including event locations, dates and additional details will be released at a later date.
