England won a small victory at the opening of Euro 2024 🏆
England’s road to Euro 2024 began with a narrow 1-0 win over Serbia to put us top of Group C. Jude Bellingham was the hero of the hour, giving us the nod after just 13 minutes thanks to a lucky deflection from Bukaya Sak.
In the first half we were on the edge of our seats. Kyle Walker almost made it two with a brave strike in the box but his effort went wide, missing both Phil Foden and Harry Kane. We were riding high, but boy, did things get choppy by the break.
After halftime, the tables turned. Serbia turned up the heat, and we somehow lost our rhythm. Aleksandar Mitrović’s penalty kick was called, but the referee failed. Traps Dušan Tadić and Luka Jović almost went past us as they looked for an equaliser, and Gareth Southgate held off making a change until it cost us.
When Southgate finally stirred the pack, Jarrod Bowen struck almost immediately, serving Harry Kane’s cross towards goal, only for Serbia goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic to make a stunning save.
The pressure did not let up. Jordan Pickford had to be on his feet, turning over a fierce shot by Dušan Vlahović. And as the clock ticked down, we all prayed for that final whistle. It’s hanging in the balance, but we made it!
Given that Slovenia and Denmark drew earlier, we are in a good position to advance to the knockouts. But if we want to go far, we’ll need to bring our first-half magic rather than the jittery game we fell into later on.
